Sherry is, in at least several ways, the way forward

I keep thinking I should write a ‘hilarious bargains of the wine world’ post for here. Two wines that would feature near the top of that list are Manzanilla sherries from Hidalgo: La Gitana and . Earlier we drank some of the Pasada Pastrana with dinner at and I was, once again, stunned by its [...]

An interesting little tasting

I ran a little tasting last night. Apart from the Salon, only one wine was generally sniffed at. Blanc des Blancs Le Mesnil 1996, Salon Corked! Bums. I haven’t had so much luck with Salon recently. Manzanilla Pasada Pastrana, Hidalgo This had a delicious aroma of nuts. It was very characterful, with a decent degree [...]

Dinner at Jeremy and Diana’s

Some good and some truly shocking wines. La Bota de Manzanilla, Equipo Navazos Really powerfully nutty on the nose. It has a good minerality to it as well. The palate is light and refined with good acidity to balance its depth of flavour. Champagne La Grande Dame 1996, Verve Cliquot Quite fruity and biscuitty on [...]

Not much fun drinking at this over-priced place

At the very disappointing Restaurant Etxebarri we didn’t drink too well. Albarino 2005, Pazo de Senorans Very fruity, light bodied and refreshing. It was a passable drink but no great excitement here. Rioja Roda I Reserva 2002, Bodegas Roda Piss boring.

Two Spanish wines, one good, one evil filth

At Restaurant Alameda we had an Albarino worthy of mention and a bottle of a typically styled, big, modern wine; a ‘dull wine’ as I like to call them. Albarino Seleccion de Anada 2001, Pazo de Senorans This has been aged in large inert tanks for several years, which supposedly allows the wine to last [...]

Good food, terrible wine

We are off to the Basque country on Saturday so there will not be any entries here whilst we are away. We have some , but drinking might not be as good as the food. The local white wine, Txakolí, is pretty basic and the nearest ‘serious’ wine region is Rioja. I can count the [...]

Speeding up

Sunday’s general drinking saw an increase in pace. The football was on, I suppose. Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg Cuvée St. Catherine l’Inedit 1998, Weinbach Weighty nose, ripe and concentrated. Palate is weighty with good acidity and lovely fruit. Really concentrated, ripe and stylish. Great long finish. Lovely. Clos St. Denis Grand Cru 1985, Domaine Dujac [...]
