A bargain Nuits-Saint-Georges

I recommended this in my [link2post id=”264″]affordable Burgundy[/link2post] post a while back. It is the last of my bottles and I think mitigating the slight angst caused by insomnia is a good reason to drink it. I slept really well last night, after being awake most of last week, so who knows why I am up again tonight.

I have been so impressed with the quality of Domaine Alain Michelot I feel I should pay him a visit on my next trip to Burgundy. Not only are they good wines that are really Nuits in character but also they are keenly priced, even if you take account of the comparative value of that village’s wines.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes 2005, Domaine Alain Michelot

This has an abundantly fruity nose that is plenteous in ripe cherry character together with a prominent earthiness. It also has a hint of meaty savouriness which I find rather attractive. It has a demure alcohol level and does not rely on new oak to give it personality – the vines and their location do that just fine. On the palate the tannic structure is very Nuits in character – quite robust with the merest scintilla of greenness. Plenty of that good cherry fruit and a laudable dash of lively acid keep the harmony just fine and there is more than a tinge of earthy complexity which shows especially on the finish. A highly enjoyable village Burgundy, it delivers interest, harmony and refreshment whilst being easy on the wallet. Certainly it’ll keep for at least five years more if you so wish.
