This review of Harwood Arms captures the experience well. We arrived just before the kitchen opened at 6.30 and watched throughout the next couple of hours as the tables filled with eager-faced professionals keen to savour the very grown-up food (and those wonderfully looked-after Ales).

I totally agree with Dan's comment on the Bloody Mary being less than expected... however the BMs were quickly forgotten as we sampled some wonderful venison wrapped scotch eggs. Those egg yolks were perfectly runny - and indeed the salt crystals completed a very enjoyable apetite enhancer.

I can't wait for our next return visit!

Fantastic review!

The "thrustingly, pulsingly, throbbingly brilliant" snails had me giggling - were they still alive? ;)

I MUST get around to visiting!

A fair and glowing review of the evening's proceedings, I'd say.

The only thing that I thought was not up to scratch was the pre-food bloody mary.

I like my BMs spicy and hot. The £7 it cost for theirs was disappointing and far too over priced for what it was: a bland and boring glass of marginally flavoured tomato juice.

What sold it to me was the fact that they made it with their own chilli & rosemary vodka, so you'd think it might have had some bite. But alas, no. Even after going back to the bar for more tabasco sauce and emptying quite a lot into it, it was still bland and not at all spicy, or even flavoursome.

My advice: steer well clear of these if you like BMs... these do the Harwood Arms no justice whatsoever. I would never order one again from this place (even if it was free), unless the staff demonstrated some magical ability to actually make one properly.
